Insulation Health & Safety

The safety of insulation materials is a question that many people ask.  Our insulation products are not hazardous and are very safe to install and use in your home.

Common insulation products, such as fibreglass, polyester, sheepswool and cellulose (shredded paper) are fibrous in nature, as it is the mat of fibres that creates their effective insulation properties.

Cutting or blowing these fibrous materials during manufacture or installation releases small quantities of loose fibres or dust. Ceiling spaces in homes or building sites are dusty environments anyway, and responsible manufacturers or builders always recommend that installers be protected against this dust, by wearing simple face masks, long sleeve shirts and trousers, or goggles for overhead work, to ensure the most comfortable work environment during installation.

The key question is whether exposure to these dusts represents a health hazard - both during installation and in situ over the long term. Health and safety of insulation products has therefore been thoroughly researched in Australia and internationally.

The answer is that none of the common insulation products listed above are considered hazardous.

Non hazardous and no harmful VOC's

Fibreglass products also do not contain harmful VOC's - Volatile Organic Compounds; they do not contain any harmful amounts of formaldehyde or other organic chemicals, and no Ozone depleting Products (ODP's) are used in their manufacture.

This ensures our products are not hazardous products and are safe to install and use in your home or in other insulation applications for the life of the building.

Four Zero Fire Rating

Australian Insulations primarily use Fibreglass Batts wherever possible which does not burn and can actually retard the spread of fire.

The results of tests for 'Early Fire Hazard Properties' on various insulation materials, in accordance with Australian Standard 1530.3, appear below.

AS 1530.3

Fibreglass Batts (1)t

Ignitability* 0
Spread of Flame** 0
Heat Evolved** 0
Smoke Developed** 0

*0 = Excellent; 20 = Poor
**0 Excellent; 10 = Poor

Fibreglass Batts achieve the best possible fire rating of four zeros, because:

  • they are made from heat resistant materials - glass and volcanic rock respectively
  • unlike some other insulation products they do not rely on the addition of fire retardant chemicals.

All homeowners should insist on a written "four zero fire rating" guarantee for insulation (under A.S. 1530.3) prior to its installation.

Safe to install

Our insulation products are safe to install and use.  We do not use foil products which need to be carefully installed to keep them away from electrical power outlets or lights, as they can conduct electricity through the aluminium metal reflective covering. Our products will not conduct electricity.
